Best Zero-Balance Digital Account — Kotak 811 Full KYC
Kotak 811 Full KYC currently has zero Average Monthly Balance, digital onboarding, Video KYC, a free virtual debit card and free online NEFT/RTGS/IMPS. Kotak currently pays 2.50% p.a. on plain savings balances.
Best for: people who do not want to keep money parked just to avoid minimum-balance penalties.
Important trade-off: physical debit-card fees depend on the exact 811 variant. Also, Kotak's higher advertised ActivMoney return is generated through an automatic sweep into term deposits; it is not the normal savings-account rate.
Best for Higher Interest and Fewer Routine Fees — IDFC FIRST Savings Account
IDFC FIRST offers regular savings variants with ₹10,000 or ₹25,000 AMB, Video KYC and “Zero Fee Banking” on many commonly used services such as digital transfers, ATM withdrawals and cheque-book services.
Its latest official rate schedule available on review lists:
- up to ₹5 lakh: 3.00% p.a.
- above ₹5 lakh up to ₹10 crore: 7.00% p.a. progressively
Interest is credited monthly.
“Progressively” is important: if your balance is ₹6 lakh, the higher rate applies only to the portion above ₹5 lakh.
Best for: users who normally keep a larger balance and want fewer routine banking charges.
Skip it if: you want a true zero-balance regular account.

Best Public-Sector Digital Account — SBI Insta Plus
SBI Insta Plus can be opened through YONO using Video KYC by eligible new-to-bank customers without visiting a branch.
It supports UPI, IMPS, NEFT, Internet Banking, YONO, a RuPay debit card and online cheque-book requests. SBI currently pays 2.50% p.a. on savings balances.
SBI also states that the penalty for non-maintenance of Average Monthly Balance in savings accounts has been waived since March 2020.
Best for: users who want digital onboarding plus SBI's large branch and ATM network.
Useful SBI alternative: Savings Plus
SBI Savings Plus uses an automatic sweep into Multi Option Deposits once the configured threshold is crossed, while allowing reverse sweep when money is needed.
Best Large Private-Bank Ecosystem — HDFC Regular Savings via InstaAccount
HDFC's InstaAccount is a digital opening journey for products such as Regular Savings and SavingsMax.
The current Regular Savings balance requirements are:
- metro/urban: ₹10,000 AMB
- semi-urban: ₹5,000 AMB
- rural: ₹2,500 AQB
HDFC currently pays 2.50% p.a., with interest credited quarterly. The account comes with HDFC MobileBanking, NetBanking and BillPay.
Best for: users who want a broad private-bank ecosystem covering cards, loans, investments and branches.
Best App-Led Everyday Banking — ICICI Regular Savings + iMobile Pay
ICICI's main strength is its iMobile Pay ecosystem for transfers, bills, recharges and card controls.
ICICI currently pays 2.50% p.a. on savings balances. Its current Regular Savings schedule lists:
- metro/urban: ₹10,000 MAB
- semi-urban/rural: ₹5,000 MAB
- online NEFT and RTGS: nil
- UPI: nil
- outward IMPS: chargeable according to amount
- standard debit-card annual fee: ₹300
Best for: users who prefer a mature mobile-banking app and broad private-bank product ecosystem.
Skip it if: minimising transaction fees is your top priority.
Best Balance-or-Spend Model — Axis Liberty Digital Savings
Axis Liberty is unusual because you can qualify through either:
- ₹25,000 Average Monthly Balance, or
- ₹25,000 eligible merchant spends in a month
Eligible spends can include merchant transactions through mobile/internet banking, UPI and debit card under the account terms.
Axis currently lists a 2.50% p.a. savings rate for normal balances.
Best for: users who spend actively from their account and prefer not to keep ₹25,000 idle every month.
Important trade-off: if you neither maintain the balance nor meet the spend condition, the account can be migrated and applicable charges can follow.

Which Account Fits You?
Choose Kotak 811 if zero balance matters most.
Choose IDFC FIRST if you keep larger balances and value higher progressive interest and low routine fees.
Choose SBI if branch reach and public-sector banking matter.
Compare HDFC and ICICI if you want a broad private-bank relationship across banking, cards, loans and investments.
Consider Axis Liberty if monthly spending can realistically replace the balance requirement.
Do Not Choose Only by Interest Rate
Also compare:
- minimum-balance requirement
- debit-card annual fee
- IMPS/NEFT/RTGS charges
- ATM limits
- cash-deposit rules
- app usability
- branch availability
- sweep/FD integration
- fraud-reporting and card-blocking controls
For a small account balance, annual fees can matter more than a modest difference in interest rate.
Deposit Insurance
Eligible deposits with an insured bank are covered by the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, including principal and accrued interest, subject to scheme rules.
Deposits held at multiple branches of the same bank are generally aggregated when held in the same right and capacity.
How These Picks Were Chosen
Selections are based on current interest rates, minimum-balance rules, digital onboarding, mobile/app banking, UPI and transfer features, routine charges, sweep facilities and branch/network usefulness.
This comparison is for normal resident savings-account use. Salary accounts, BSBDA/Jan Dhan, senior-citizen and wealth variants can have different rules.
