Quick Answer

For most users, the best UPI app depends on what matters most:

NeedBest starting option
Best overall UPI appPhonePe
Best for simple everyday UPIGoogle Pay
Best for bills + payment utilitiesPaytm
Best fast-growing alternativeNavi
Best for cashback-focused userssuper.money
Best official/simple UPI appBHIM
Best for payments inside chatWhatsApp
Best for Amazon shoppersAmazon Pay

UPI itself is the payment rail. These apps are different front ends on top of the same interoperable UPI system, so a PhonePe user can pay a Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM or bank-app UPI ID/QR and vice versa.

Consumer UPI is primarily app-based, not website-based. The official websites linked in this guide are mainly for product information, support and terms.

Current UPI Market Context

UPI processed about 24.51 billion transactions worth ₹29.82 lakh crore in August 2026, according to NPCI's monthly product statistics.

Latest August 2026 app-volume estimates based on NPCI data put the leading apps at roughly:

  • PhonePe: 45.9%
  • Google Pay: 32.4%
  • Paytm: 8.1%
  • Navi: 4.4%
  • super.money: 1.7%
  • BHIM: about 1%

Market share is useful for understanding scale, but it does not automatically mean an app is best for every user.

Best Overall — PhonePe

Best for: users who want the broadest UPI feature set in one app.

PhonePe currently combines core UPI payments with:

  • UPI Lite
  • RuPay Credit Card on UPI
  • Credit Line on UPI
  • UPI Circle
  • UPI AutoPay
  • bill payments and recharges
  • FASTag
  • UPI International
  • NRI/NRO-related UPI support in eligible cases
  • expense splitting

PhonePe's current UPI Lite terms allow eligible small-value payments without entering the UPI PIN, subject to NPCI/bank limits.

PhonePe combines very high adoption with one of the broadest UPI feature sets.

Trade-off

The app includes many financial and commerce services, so it can feel busier than a minimalist UPI app.

Best for Simple Everyday UPI — Google Pay

Best for: users who mainly want bank-to-bank payments, QR payments, recharges and bills.

Google Pay supports:

  • send/receive money through UPI
  • merchant QR payments
  • bill payments
  • mobile recharge
  • transaction history
  • rewards
  • eligible RuPay Credit Card on UPI

Google states that it works with banks supporting BHIM UPI.

The payment flow is simple and familiar, and Google Pay remains one of the two most-used UPI apps in India.

Trade-off

Google Pay is less focused on becoming an all-in-one financial marketplace than some rivals, which is either a strength or a limitation depending on what you want.

Best for Bills and Payment Utilities — Paytm

Best for: users who want UPI alongside bill-payment and recharge workflows.

Paytm currently supports:

  • regular UPI
  • UPI Lite
  • RuPay Credit Card on UPI
  • mobile and utility payments
  • credit-card bill payment
  • recharge and other payment utilities
  • UPI Tap & Pay for limited users, according to NPCI's live-app listing

Paytm remains strong when your use case extends beyond scan-and-pay into repeated bill and recharge activity.

Trade-off

The app contains a broad mix of financial/payment services, so users looking for only a minimal UPI interface may prefer BHIM or Google Pay.

Best Fast-Growing Alternative — Navi

Best for: users who want a newer UPI app with a clean payments focus and growing adoption.

Navi UPI currently offers:

  • bank-to-bank UPI
  • scan and pay
  • UPI Lite
  • RuPay Credit Card on UPI
  • bills and recharges
  • payment tracking
  • reward opportunities

Navi's UPI transaction-volume share rose to around 4.4% in August 2026, making it one of the most significant challengers outside the top three.

It has grown rapidly while adding most mainstream UPI functions.

Trade-off

Its ecosystem and merchant/service breadth are still smaller than PhonePe or Paytm.

Best for Cashback — super.money

Best for: users who actively value cashback on merchant UPI payments.

super.money promotes:

  • superUPI
  • up to 5% cashback on eligible merchant UPI transactions
  • cashback redemption to the bank account
  • credit products linked to UPI
  • bill/fee-related payment features
  • a broader rewards/commerce ecosystem

Unlike many apps that rely mainly on coupons or occasional rewards, super.money has made direct cashback its central UPI proposition.

Trade-off

Cashback is governed by offer terms and eligibility. Rewards can also have validity/expiry conditions, so do not treat the headline percentage as guaranteed on every transaction forever.

Best Official / Minimal UPI App — BHIM

Best for: users who want a straightforward UPI experience from the NPCI ecosystem.

BHIM supports:

  • pay by UPI ID
  • scan and pay
  • send/request money
  • multiple linked bank accounts
  • UPI transaction history
  • dispute raising for failed/pending transactions
  • account balance check
  • UPI PIN management

NPCI's BHIM statistics show hundreds of banks live on the platform; the July 2026 page lists 553 banks live on BHIM.

BHIM is a clean reference implementation of UPI without the heavy shopping/financial-product layer of many private apps.

Trade-off

Its rewards and broader commerce features are much more limited than cashback-led or super-app competitors.

Best for UPI Inside Chat — WhatsApp

Best for: users who want to send money without leaving a messaging app.

WhatsApp's India payment experience now includes:

  • UPI person-to-person payments
  • prepaid mobile recharges
  • metro-related services in supported cities
  • bill payments through Bharat Connect/BBPS
  • payment access through the ₹ icon

In September 2026, Meta announced bill payments across 22,722 billers in 30 categories, including electricity, water, gas, FASTag, insurance, credit-card bills and loan repayment, with a phased rollout.

Payments happen inside an app many people already use daily.

Trade-off

Its UPI market share and dedicated financial-tool depth remain much smaller than PhonePe, Google Pay or Paytm.

Best for Amazon Shoppers — Amazon Pay

Best for: people already heavily invested in the Amazon ecosystem.

Amazon Pay supports UPI for purchases and merchant payments and integrates UPI with Amazon's broader payments stack.

NPCI also lists Amazon Pay among apps supporting RuPay Credit Card on UPI.

If you already use Amazon frequently, keeping shopping and payment activity in the same ecosystem can be convenient.

Trade-off

As a standalone everyday UPI app, its usage is much lower than the market leaders.

What Features Matter Most?

1. Core UPI reliability

Every app ultimately depends on:

  • the payer app
  • PSP bank
  • sender bank
  • receiver bank
  • NPCI infrastructure
  • network conditions

So no app can guarantee that every payment will always succeed.

2. UPI Lite

UPI Lite is useful for small-value payments because eligible transactions can be made without entering the UPI PIN each time.

Availability and limits depend on current NPCI rules, bank support and app implementation.

3. RuPay Credit Card on UPI

NPCI allows eligible RuPay credit cards to be linked to supported UPI apps for merchant payments.

Person-to-person transfers and certain restricted categories are not permitted through credit-card-on-UPI.

4. UPI International

NPCI's UPI Global Acceptance allows supported apps and bank accounts to pay eligible international merchants by QR in supported countries/locations.

PhonePe explicitly supports UPI International in eligible locations.

5. Bill payments

If you regularly pay electricity, gas, broadband, credit-card or FASTag bills, a strong Bharat Connect/BBPS implementation may matter more than cashback.

6. Support and dispute handling

A failed payment is where app quality becomes important.

Check whether the app makes it easy to:

  • view transaction status
  • raise a dispute
  • contact support
  • track refunds

Which UPI App Should You Use?

Choose PhonePe if:

You want the broadest feature set and mature merchant ecosystem.

Choose Google Pay if:

You want a simple, familiar UPI experience.

Choose Paytm if:

Bills, recharges and payment utilities are central to your usage.

Choose Navi if:

You want a newer, fast-growing alternative with mainstream features.

Choose super.money if:

Cashback is your biggest priority.

Choose BHIM if:

You want a simple, official UPI-focused app.

Choose WhatsApp if:

You mostly send money to people you already chat with.

Choose Amazon Pay if:

Your payments are closely tied to Amazon shopping.

Can You Use More Than One UPI App?

Yes.

You can link the same eligible bank account to multiple UPI apps and use different UPI IDs.

A practical setup can be:

  • one primary app
  • one backup app
  • BHIM or a bank app as an additional fallback

However, if the problem is with your bank or the receiving bank, switching apps may not solve the transaction failure.

UPI Safety Rules

Never:

  • share your UPI PIN
  • enter a UPI PIN to receive money
  • scan a stranger's QR code to receive money
  • approve an unexpected collect request
  • install remote-access apps at a caller's request

Entering a UPI PIN generally authorises money leaving your account or another authenticated UPI action.

Use only official app-store versions and verify merchant/payee details before confirming.

How These Apps Were Chosen

Selections are based on:

  • current NPCI ecosystem/product data
  • app adoption and market relevance
  • core UPI functionality
  • UPI Lite / RuPay credit-card support
  • bill and recharge capabilities
  • rewards where relevant
  • official current feature pages
  • practical differences between apps

Market share was used as evidence of scale, not as the only quality measure.
