Quick Answer

For a Computer Science, IT or eligible electronics graduate who wants to become an IT Officer in an Indian public-sector bank, the clearest entry-level route is usually:

Eligible technical degree → IBPS Specialist Officer (SO) application → IT Officer (Scale I) → Preliminary Exam → Main Exam → Interview → provisional allotment to a participating public-sector bank → joining as a Scale-I specialist officer.

There are two broader routes worth tracking:

  1. IBPS SO – IT Officer (Scale I): the most standardised entry-level route across 11 participating public-sector banks.
  2. Direct specialist recruitment by SBI or individual PSBs: titles may include Assistant Manager (System), Deputy Manager (Systems), IT Officer, Cyber Security, Data, Cloud, Digital, FinTech or similar roles. These vacancies are not necessarily annual and often have different experience requirements.

For a fresher or early-career candidate who meets the educational criteria, IBPS IT Officer Scale I is the main route to watch first.

Route 1 — IBPS SO IT Officer (Scale I)

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection conducts the Common Recruitment Process for Specialist Officers in participating Public Sector Banks.

Participating banks

The current CRP SPL-XVI cycle covers these 11 banks:

  • Bank of Baroda
  • Bank of India
  • Bank of Maharashtra
  • Canara Bank
  • Central Bank of India
  • Indian Bank
  • Indian Overseas Bank
  • Punjab National Bank
  • Punjab & Sind Bank
  • UCO Bank
  • Union Bank of India

State Bank of India does not recruit through IBPS SO.

Current eligibility snapshot

For IT Officer (Scale I), the standard educational route is one of the following from a recognised institution:

  • 4-year Engineering / Technology degree in:
    • Computer Science
    • Computer Applications
    • Information Technology
    • Electronics
    • Electronics & Telecommunications
    • Electronics & Communication
    • Electronics & Instrumentation

OR

  • Postgraduate degree in:
    • Electronics
    • Electronics & Telecommunication
    • Electronics & Communication
    • Electronics & Instrumentation
    • Computer Science
    • Information Technology
    • Computer Applications

OR

  • Graduation plus DOEACC / NIELIT 'B' Level.

For CRP SPL-XVI, the general age band is 20 to 30 years as on 1 July 2026, with category-based relaxations under the notification.

IBPS IT Officer Scale I is an entry-level specialist route; the current eligibility rules do not prescribe a separate prior-work-experience requirement for this post.

Current pay scale

The notified Junior Management Grade Scale-I basic-pay scale is:

₹48,480 – ₹85,920

Allowances and perquisites are governed by the rules of the bank to which the candidate is allotted.

Current Selection Process

The 2026 CRP SPL-XVI cycle changed the Specialist Officer examination structure, so candidates should not rely on older exam-pattern pages.

Preliminary Examination

For IT Officer, the current Preliminary stage contains:

  • English Language
  • Reasoning
  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • Professional Knowledge

The current cycle uses 100 questions for 125 marks in 80 minutes. Candidates must clear the required cutoffs to move to the Main Examination.

Main Examination

The current Main Examination includes:

  • English Language
  • Reasoning
  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • Professional Knowledge
  • an English descriptive paper

In the current notification, tests other than Professional Knowledge are qualifying in nature for merit purposes; the Professional Knowledge component is the key merit-bearing written test.

Interview and final merit

Candidates shortlisted after the Main Examination are called for a Common Interview.

The current notification uses an 80:20 weightage between the Main Examination and Interview for final selection.

Final allotment also depends on:

  • merit
  • category
  • bank preferences
  • actual vacancies reported by participating banks
  • eligibility/document verification

What Should an IT Officer Know?

A bank IT Officer is not simply a programmer. The role can involve the technology that keeps a bank's digital and branch infrastructure running.

Useful preparation areas include:

  • Computer Networks
  • Operating Systems
  • DBMS and SQL
  • Data Structures
  • Software Engineering
  • Programming fundamentals
  • OOP concepts
  • Web technologies
  • Cyber Security
  • Information Security
  • Cryptography basics
  • Cloud fundamentals
  • Linux / Unix
  • Computer Architecture
  • Digital Payments
  • APIs and system integration
  • Core banking concepts
  • Disaster recovery and business continuity
  • Database and application support

IBPS does not publish a detailed chapter-by-chapter IT syllabus in the same way a university does, so preparation should be guided by the Professional Knowledge requirement, official handouts, previous exam trends and standard CS/IT fundamentals.

What Does a Bank IT Officer Actually Do?

Exact duties depend on the bank and posting, but an IT specialist can work in areas such as:

  • core banking systems
  • application support
  • network operations
  • database administration
  • information security
  • cyber-security monitoring
  • digital banking
  • ATM/POS/payment infrastructure
  • UPI and payment integrations
  • data centres and cloud infrastructure
  • vendor and technology management
  • IT audits and compliance
  • software/project management
  • disaster recovery
  • branch technology support

A candidate may not get to choose the exact technology team immediately after joining.

Route 2 — SBI Specialist Cadre Recruitment

SBI is one of India's 12 Public Sector Banks, but it recruits specialist technology staff through its own careers portal, not IBPS SO.

SBI periodically advertises technology roles under Specialist Cadre Officer recruitment. Titles have included roles such as:

  • Assistant Manager (System)
  • Deputy Manager (Systems)
  • Information Security
  • Project Management & Delivery
  • Infrastructure / Cloud Operations
  • Networking Operations
  • IT Architecture
  • digital-product and specialist technology roles

These recruitments are vacancy-driven rather than one fixed annual IT Officer exam. Eligibility may require specific degrees, certifications or professional experience.

If you are a fresher, do not assume every SBI technology vacancy is suitable. Read each advertisement separately.

Route 3 — Direct Specialist Recruitment by Individual PSBs

Public-sector banks can also conduct their own specialist recruitment outside the common IBPS SO cycle.

Examples from recent recruitment history include technology streams covering:

  • IT Officers
  • Cyber Security
  • Data Science
  • FinTech
  • Cloud
  • Database Administration
  • Network Security
  • Digital Payments
  • APIs
  • Product Management
  • IT Audit

These direct recruitments often target candidates with experience and may recruit into Scale II, III, IV or specialised contractual positions.

For someone just finishing B.Tech / BE / MCA or another eligible qualification, IBPS Scale I is generally the simpler route to monitor. Experienced technology professionals should monitor individual bank career pages as well.

  2. Strengthen core Computer Science subjects.
  3. Build speed in reasoning, quantitative aptitude and English.

If you are already eligible

  1. Download the latest IBPS SO notification.

  7. Apply separately to suitable SBI and individual-bank technology recruitments when they appear.

  • age cutoff date
  • category certificate rules
  • nationality conditions
  • updated vacancies

Do not assume that eligibility from one year's notification automatically carries forward to the next.

How This Guide Was Prepared

This Guide uses current information from the Department of Financial Services, IBPS, SBI Careers and official bank recruitment material reviewed on 30 September 2026.

The IBPS IT Officer route is relatively standardised. SBI and direct-bank specialist hiring is more variable, so individual advertisements always override general guidance on this page.
