NBFCs & Development Financial Institutions

Complete banking-examination study module on non-banking financial companies, RBI scale-based NBFC regulation, NABARD, SIDBI, Exim Bank, NHB, NaBFID, refinance and India's All India Financial Institutions.

India's specialised finance ecosystem connecting NBFCs with rural, MSME, export, housing and infrastructure development.

Prerequisites: Banking-system structure (BA-02), bank deposits (BA-05), lending (BA-06) and rural/MSME credit (BA-08).

Module objective. Commercial banks are central to India's financial system, but they are not the only providers of finance. NBFCs can serve borrowers, assets and markets that need specialist lending or alternative distribution. Development Financial Institutions (DFIs) address long-term, sector-specific gaps in credit. This module explains how they work, who regulates them, and why India's five RBI-regulated All India Financial Institutions have different mandates.

The big picture

Financial system → Commercial banks + NBFCs + DFIs + other regulated institutions.

  • Commercial banks mobilise demand deposits and operate as core payments-and-credit intermediaries.
  • NBFCs specialise in permitted financial activities such as lending, investment, factoring, housing finance and certain financial-information services.
  • DFIs/AIFIs aim to develop strategically important markets by providing refinance, direct long-term finance, guarantees, market development or institutional support.

The five institutions studied here are complementary, not substitutes for one another.
